Wal-Mart was proven to have lowered the standard of living in several studies commissioned by Wal-Mart themselves. This was news a few months ago, so I can't get you any active links, but I may be able to find something to point you there. Also, just because a federal law regulates a certain thing does not mean a state is not also able to create their own statutes. For example, Illinois will very soon regulate mercury emissions from coal-fired plants. That is totally legal even though federal laws govern the same thing. Wal-Mart does more than depress the standard of living in an area, they go out of their way to kill local competition. I had a friend who opened a little gift shop in a strip mall by Wal-Mart. He went out of his way to find things Wal-Mart didn't carry. Within six months Wal-Mart had everything in their store he had and sold it way below cost. Needless to say he closed up. As soon as he was gone, so was the stuff like he sold. The little stores that usually populate a Wal-Mart area are there on sufferance so Wal-Mart can say they welcome competition and stores can stay in business. Never a local business you notice, always some sort of a chain. In this area it is usually Radio Shack (too techie for WM), Cato's Women's clothes and an $1 store. They generic the shopping experience. Local merchants could compete but Wal-Mart doesn't want that, if everyone has generic merchandise like they do, then Wal-Mart looks pretty good by being a big store where you can get all your generic stuff at once. A good local merchant with a good price is a threat and they will stop at nothing to run them out. <br>As far as Wal-Mart splitting companies, yes they could but that would really expose them as being too cheap to offer health insurance. They couldn't lower wages too much, most Wal-Marts start their help at minimum wage. They say things like "our wages start out at $7 an hour" They do that by averaging every person in the store salary, including managers. I talked to them a couple years ago about working at the service desk, they offered 15 cents an hour above minimum to start. After a year you get a whoppin 25 cent raise. Yes, they do depress the standard of living. Wal-Mart also encourages urban sprawl. Never open a store in the downtown area, always out on the edge of town. I am not a Wal-Mart fan.<br><br>

So you talked to them about getting a minimum wage job, and they offered you just a little above minimum wage? The villians! What the hell do you think a service clerk should be making? $15 an hour?<br><br>As for that, what job in retail *isn't* a minimum wage job? It's where I started when I was a teenager, and yeah the position I started in got a whopping 25 cent raise. That's pretty standard across the board, not just Wal-Mart. But unlike most others I worked with, I wasn't content to stay in one position and actually moved up in the company. By the time I left 6 years later I was making $12 an hour, and this is back in the days when minimum wage was well below $5. I believe I started at $3 something an hour. Had I just stayed in the same spot I certainly wouldn't have quadrupled my income, I'd have been making less than half of what I did.<br><br>Wal Mart isn't depressing anyones standard of living by offering the lazy ones who don't bother to apply themselves a quarter raise after a year, those people are doing it to themselves. A minimum wage job isn't meant in todays world to sustain a family, it's a starting point - but it's up to the individuals to apply themselves.<br><br>

I did not know what their starting wage was, it was the first supercenter in this area. Their job advertisement stated jobs from minimum wage to considerably more than that based on experience. It turned out every person who wasn't a manager was offered the same salary no matter what the position or responsibility.<br><br>At the time I applied I was working as a CSR for an insurance agency making $2 an hour more than minimum, no benefits. I left that job shortly after that and came to work for my present retail employer at their service desk for about the same wage with benefits and a 401k with 6% matching. (Ironic, isn't it the "good business job" vs the lowly retail). I enjoy working retail, I like people, even the ones who think they are better than the clerks.<br><br><br><br>
what if you need a job and that's all their is?<br>answers such as yours are not always the option. It's not like anyone can go get a job for $30 / hr.<br><br>There is a matter of "fairness". I'm not saying they should earn $20 /hr as a WalMart greeter, but there's a big difference between that and minimum wage $5.25 which NO ONE could live off. Some "family values" in America. And think about this... the Middle class is under attack - wages shrinking due to outsourcing... as they decline it hurst the economy... fewer people have much $ to spend... it's a slide down a slippery slope, pal.... to recession.<br><br>Is it fair for a $10 Billion profit Company to offer slave wages?<br>and indirectly make the taxpayer pick up their healthcare?<br><br><br>rigger you may be comfortable now, but who's to say in 5 -10 years - your line of work might be "outsourced " to someone who'll work for next to nothin in China and India... <br>where will you turn?<br><br>David (OFI)<br>
My line of work is no work, been retired since 1991. Made up my mind to retire at the age of 54 but made it at 53. With and income of this year of 91.250 dollars I am sure off the amount since my accountant gave me back my tax forms today. uh oh 80.000 after I send my taxes to uncle Sam. Not bad for a highschool quitout.<br><br>
