I hadn't repaired permissions in a loooon time. Did it tonight, and there was a load of permissions that were changed. The funny thing is that I did it again immediately after the first time, and the same set of files had their permissions changed.

. . . . . Here's lookin' at [color:red]you kid.

I run Onyx a few times each month -- that repairs permissions, empties the unneeded caches and runs the cron scripts. I spin the HD down to sleep each night so I run these maintenance scripts manually .... just because.

You were probably seeing the "Using special permissions" Text ...you will see that every time. It isn't actually fixing those permissions, It is using them to do whatever it is trying to do at the time.

In reply to:

Well, I'm not going to any more. What's the point?

I don't have the answer but I've been told that permissions should be repaired every time you install new software or new software updates.
I take no chances and do just that.
I also repair permissions just before I do a back-up.
As a matter of fact, many/most back-up software have a repair permissions option built-in.

Been using OS X since the public beta...I've never done any maintenance. If the computer starts to bog down or behave strangely, I wipe the hard drive.

I figure all that stuff is for people who like fixing things.
