the only way to make it "easy" for amateurs is to force them to have a .Mac account, i'd guess.

not a bad solution, but part of the fun of a website is having your own easy to remember domain name.

--
"I am mindful that diversity is one of the strengths of the country" --president bush on 9/27/05
Edited by sean on 01/05/06 01:47 PM (server time).

of course they have to allow people to use their own servers as well. i just don't see how that FTP process can be made easy, though. i didn't mean to imply that the only choice would be .Mac . . . sorry. i was just talking about "easy."

--
"I am mindful that diversity is one of the strengths of the country" --president bush on 9/27/05

Maybe I'm taking it for granted because I deal with it so much, but what's so difficult about the FTP process?

DW actually has a nice GUI for their internal FTP system - I imagine, based on some of the things that iTunes and iPhoto can do, that an Apple version of a web program would be equally accessible.

finding the server information is very difficult for the folks that i've helped who have wanted websites (e.g., teachers). once you have all of the information and know where to enter it, you're golden.

--
"I am mindful that diversity is one of the strengths of the country" --president bush on 9/27/05

yeah, that's the only hard part . . . or, at least the rest gets used again and again so it can be learned. you tend to only enter the server stuff once and most people don't understand "server stuff."

at our university, they stopped supporting mac when they shifted to groupwise. well, we can still get into the system from off-campus, but they force you to use an FTP tool. i think of the 15 or so Mac users in my department, i am the only person who has successfully used FTP to reach the networked files we sometimes need. everyone else waits for the secretary to email them the files the next business day.

--
"I am mindful that diversity is one of the strengths of the country" --president bush on 9/27/05

The great thing about Transmit is if you copy an FTP address and paste it into the first field in the program, it automatically fills out all the other fields with the pertinent information...

I only wish Transmit was able to copy the full internet address of a file to the clipboard so I could paste it into an email or a document...

Or does it do that already...?
