I have a question for all you wireless people out there...

Have you ever gone to a store or someplace else that had internet and were you able to connect via wireless?

If so, how does that work? Are you on YOUR provider then? Would iChat work still? Would it be YOUR IP address or the one where you are connecting through?

We have internet at work, DSL, and I was wondering, if say I took my soon to be mine iBook to work and it had an airport card in it...would it connect? We have a pretty strong security and firewall on there..due to privacy...just wondering....

depends on how it's set up... in many cases you just set your book up for DHCP and look for a wireless channel in the airport settings...

[color:red] Kiss My Banana!
Visit me here!

So is that kinda like piggy-backing off of someone else's internet hook-up?

[color:blue]All you need in this life is ignorance and confidence, and then Success is sure - Mark Twain

if you set your iBook to DHCP and the location to automatic and the wireless setting to use best signal strength it will automatically connect to any open wireless network. The IP address will be whatever that network assigns you (most likely an internal network address like 192.168.1.x) iChat and other IMs, as well as email will all work because they don't care what IP address you have.

For networks requiring passwords and such, you might want to setup up locations in the network panel. This allows you to configure different setups depending where you are. So when you go to work, just select you Work location and it will know the setup for your work and do the same with your home location.

I tried my iBook in an Apple store (which has an open network) and I was chatting with my wife via MSN messenger instantly. Really neat tech.
