Loc: The Wizard's Balcony

Looks like Katrina's heading straight for us... I think thing's are going to get somewhat interesting here for the next couple of days. School and work have already been cancelled, and I'm not a property owner, so my friends and I will just have a hurricane party somewhere. Probably here at my place.

It's been some years since I've been through a hurricane; the last big one that comes to mind is Andrew, and it was a big one. But like I say, I rent, so there's really not too much for me to worry about. I mean, I may be out of power for a couple of days or a week or something, but so what? I've got my iPod and my iBook, and when their batteries start to run down, I can go up on campus to one of the buildings that runs on LSU's power plant and get a charge.

Think I'll go to Wal-Mart now and get some flashlight batteries. I'll let you guys know what kind of fiasco that turns out to be.

Oh, and you can see a nifty little animated gif of the hurricane here. Aren't animated gifs cool? They're so, like, high tech and all.

After having gone through 2 cat 2's last year -- an not getting the full brunt of them -- I can tell you it ain't someting to take lightly. Going without power for a few days sounds like no big deal. But after day 3, tell me it's still no biggie. If you're not getting out of Dodge like people have been urged to do, then you better keep your head down. And if you're just now thinking a/b stuff like batteries and candles and water and canned food, well... good luck finding any of it still on the shelves.

And believe me, finding a lagoon in your living room, or nothing but joists over your head ain't the sole province of home-owners.

Good luck, man. Here's hoping it fizzles. Fast.

Yeah, I know enough to take this thing seriously. And I'm not in NOLA, I'm in Baton rouge, about 70 miles northwest of there, so we won't get the full brunt of it... maybe that wasn't clear in my first post. People are evacuating from New Orleans to here; I've got a couple of refugees at my apartment right now.

And I was able to get batteries and some good eats at the store; you just have to know where to go... which wound up not being Wal-Mart.
