I think it goes back to the fact we turn the TV on. So we say I'm going to see what's on. Who's on that show? Where as we have no control of the movie (theatre) other than to go in and watch. Who's in that film?

"What's on at the cinema? What's on TV? Who plays the lead in Gerry Maguire? Who plays the lead in Kojak?" Someone might be IN a movie, or ON TV, but if they're ON TV, then they're IN a show ON TV - and if they're IN a movie, they're ON screen, aren't they? The "in" refers to the show, the "on" to the medium.

- padmavyuha

EDIT: oh, okay, someone can be ON a talk show, for some reason - in that context maybe ON is for non-fiction, IN is for fiction? I dunno if there's any difference between US and UK usage here.

Where the truth is, there had better be love...

Refining my theory (amazing what goes through your mind while you're varnishing window frames): people are always IN a movie (though they're ON screen for a particular scene). On the TV, if it's a one-off TV show/movie, then they're IN it - and people are always IN a series (under which heading I include talk shows etc.), unless they only appear on a special occasion in the series, in which case they're ON the show - so if someone's ON a TV show, that sort of implies 'just this once'. Make sense? (Oh, and someone can be ON channel 23 tonight, or whatever...)

- padmavyuha

Where the truth is, there had better be love...

There's a light in my freezers

We all do what we do for the same reason: because it seems like a good idea at the time.
