The festival ends six months of celebration of the township's anniversary.

Checker, now 63, is best known for his song The Twist, which hit No. 1 on the Billboard Pop charts twice, in 1960 and 1961-62.

Though Guinness will not send a representative, the township knows the rules.

"We have to twist five minutes without stopping," said committee volunteer Judy Osborne.

Festival officials will use handheld counters at six entrances to the dance floor, which will be in the parking lot between Macy's and Sears.

A second person will witness the counting.

And Guinness requires dancers to do the steps properly, or be disqualified. Of course, this is the twist, not the tango. "That should be easy," Osbourne said.

Guinness also requires several forms of authentication, including videotape, photographs, a log book and independent witnesses, Osbourne said.

The current record for people doing the twist simultaneously is 1,691, set in London last year, Osbourne said.
