Aren't they trying to recapture the spirit of those places with the 'Sonic' restaurants? I don't have one near me, but I've seen ads and it seems they have that sort of 'old-time' drive-in feel to them...

Back in Black...

Yeah, I did a little Googling after I posted that reply.

I see that there were over 2400 A&W franchise outlets at their peak; Now they're down to 700. Still, that's about 690 more than I would have expected to read about.

I somehow wound up reading about fast-food franchises online. Yum! Brands, which is a spin-off of the Pepsi company, owns:

-Pizza Hut
-Taco Bell
-Long John Silvers
-A&W restaurants
-KFC

Damn Google!

Just had lunch at one of them today. One of my favorite places. It has to be one of the last car hop A&W's around. It is located in Cortland, NY. I actually took a pic of the outdoor menu box while I was sitting in my car waiting on my foot long with fries and a diet root beer. If I remembered the damn cord for my digi cam I would show you. Maybe when I get home tomorrow.

A&W drive-ins are long gone here, now they are all a bastardized combo Long John Silvers/A&W. Then we have the Pizza Hut/KFCs, Pepsico likes that combo chain thing around here.

Sonic rules! Good burgers, foot-long coneys, onion rings, and desserts. Unfortunately the one by my house sucks but there are two more within 2 miles. The best part is that 95% of the time hot car hop babes are working there. They're the only place to get old-fashioned fountain treats like real Cherry Coke, Vanilla Coke or any other soda combination. If anyone ever goes to a Sonic and orders a diet anything...they should be killed....or at least scolded severely.

Diet anything sucks. Aspartame (Nutrasweet) tastes like pee. If you want no caffeine just drink regular A&W root beer, or Hires root beer. Both are good. I believe Barq's is the only root beer with caffeine.
