I agree with one thing... I was very surprised and disappointed that Apple went with Intel instead of AMD.<br>I'd love to know why.<br><br>

From what I've read, entirely a supply issue. <br><br>AMD just doesn't have the capabilities to turn out the quantity and variety of chips that Apple wants. Also, Intel makes motherboards and specs out other parts...that's free R&D for Apple. <br><br>

Interesting...one of the biggest factors in getting rid of IBM was the Apple laptop line was lagging behind because IBM chips are too hot.<br><br>

Yeah....Intel has an 80 something percent marketshare, they invented the processor, they make motherboards, they create the architecture. If Apple was going to switch to another processor, might as well hitch your wagon to the big boys. <br><br>

I actually agree with a lot he said... right up until he mentions yet another "Brand X should buy Apple" comment. In this case, it actually does make more sense than the Disney or Sony BS over the years. But it still doesn't hold water.<br><br>Intel/Apple as one company could really kick the crap out of Windows if Intel simply stopped making chips that worked with Windows. Anyone who thinks MS could hop in bed with AMD to make up the difference is simply kidding themselves. But we all know that simply isn't going to happen.<br><br>So while they *could* see some serious sales of Intel chips due to this Apple deal, I don't see a drastic change for either company unless the Mac OS gets licensed to PC vendors, thus making Apple a software only type of company.<br><br>I dunno, but this whole deal just smells of opportunity for both parties involved. I think it'll be a good thing over time, if for no other reason than to give a big F#ck You to all the "industry pundits" who make a living off a tired old Mhz argument.<br><br>If Intel can provide processor parity between the two OS makers (I see no reason why they couldn't) AND Apple could lower their prices, then the only real argument left is the OS/Software itself. And Apple could easily win that battle. AMD can certainly hold their own in certain niches, though- a lot of people prefer using their chips for gaming rigs, fwiw...<br><br>Back in Black...

Interesting read and somehow convincing too. But a much simpler (and less fun) reason is that Apple had no other choice in the long run, and AMD was a distant second choice. And of course Intel is ecstatic about this because "the innovator", the 3 percent powerhouse, wants it's chips.<br><br>Not that a trip into Cringley's reality distortion field wasn't enjoyable. If he ends upbeing right, please forget you read this.<br><br>

Oh yeah...all the benchmarks I've seen put AMD as the champ. They also have more 64-bit stuff, from what I've read. <br><br>But I just doubt AMD could be as good of a supplier as Intel, volume-wise. <br><br>

Exactly...Intel rarely has supply problems, and if they do, everybody suffers, so there's no lost competitive advantage. <br><br>
