Considering a cell phone for my 12-yr-old. Cingular has a pretty good deal on this phone at $29.99 and free shipping with one of their pay-as-you-go plans. I think pre-paid is the best way to control usage and fees, and the phone seems to have a decent feature set (no camera). Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with these phones.

I would think for a 12-year-old, just about any phone would do.

You're definitely on the right track with a prepaid jobby for a kid...there are tons of options.

If you want a plan, there's Cingular's Go Phone...or for straight pre-paid, Virgin Mobile, TracFone, Net 10, yadda

Sweet.

I'm considering a GoPhone myself. I was interested in the GoPhone program when AT&T had it, but decided to wait out the merger and see what happened on the other end.

I just flat-out refuse to sign a cell phone contract. Principle of the matter and all that

I was always very satisfied with AT&T wireless. The transition to Cingular has been uneventful in So. Fla. The litmus test will be how good the service is when I get back to NYC. AT&T had spent heavily to improve their sevice and coverage in the 5 boroughs, so I'll be interested to see if there's any change.
