Hey Bryan - I came across this site today, don't know if it will be of any help to you in deciding *when* to buy, or if it's old news to you, but thought I'd pass it along anyway.

MacRumors Buyer's Guide

This page provides a product summary for each Apple model. The intent is to provide our best recommendations regarding current product cycles, and to provide a summary of currently available rumors for each model.

Disclaimer: This page is based on rumors and speculation and we provide no guarantee to its accuracy. We take no responsibility for purchase decisions made based on this information.

Methods

With the exception of "Don't Buy - Updates Soon", the remainder of recommendations are simply calculated based on the proximity of the most recent product release. The sooner from release, the stronger the "buy" recommendation that is made. When enough rumors accumulate regarding a particular product's release or enough time has elapsed between updates, that product will receive a "Don't Buy - Updates Soon" rating.

While our recommendations are provided, readers are encouraged to sift through the data provided and to come to their own conclusions.

Traditionally, PowerMac updates have been the most predictable with regular updates. Apple LCD's and Xserve's may not see frequent enough updates to follow a particular pattern. As well, timelines are sometimes skewed with "new formfactor releases" - such as the 14" iBook and 12/17" Powerbooks which were released without updating the remaining models.

We are looking at new iBooks too and ran across the Don't Buy rating. My wife needs one soon and after searching other rumor sites, there does not seem to be any light on when updates are coming.
