Wife's iPod came in this morning...she waited until I got home and i've charged the iPod as instructed, installed the iPod software, and have registered it per the wizard/webpage, and now I have the beachball on iTunes. Not sure what's the deal....anybody?

I named it....but then it asked if I wanted to upload all the itunes music library and keep it synced... that's not the case...there's just too much in my library. I would like to be able to pick and choose... Now I have the beachball and I'm not sure whether I should force quit itunes or not.

I would try logging out, and if that doesn't work, I spose you have no choice but to force-quit.

You can go into the prefs before you plug the iPod back in and tell it not to sync from the library.

You could reformat the iPod using disk utilty. After it mounts it will ask if you want to reinstall the needed the software and click OK. In iTunes set your prefs to manual instead of automatic. On mine I have set up to auto sync to just one smart playlist.

Thanks. I force quit iTunes and was able to get it working just fine. However, I will say that USB is SOOOO slow. Uploaded 15 songs and it took about 20 minutes. WOW. Could be because they were big files... AIFF. Is it much faster with a firewire doc? Is that what i should be pushing for?

I only have firewire with mine but Rick's shuffle has the usb. It took about 25 minutes to upload the whole library which was a little less than max size of the shuffle capacity. 80%
