Hi guys does anyone have a quick answer to this? Does Spotlight work with an external drive? Can you index a DVD when you burn files so you don't have to index it everytime you insert it? Thanks. We have a large amount of files for a historical book here at work and they need quick access.

I read that when a FW drive begins to index automatically and you don't want it to:

System Preferences > Spotlight > click the Privacy tab > drag the firewire drive to the box, and it will no longer index that drive.

Maybe this is a clue where to begin looking.

Don't know.

But I burned a CD from the Finder yesterday with Tiger. There is no index data on the CD. I just tried searching for a file based on the filename, with the CD in the drive and spotlight found both the file on the CD and on my computer HD.

But when I tried to search for some text contents inside the file, spotlight only found the file on the computer HD. So, I don't think the CD has any index information on it - whether you can put that info on the CD when you burn I guess is another question.

[color:red]Allez Cuisine! Gary I think he wants it to index so they can find picture files quickly. Last year this book project had 800+ photos and they need to be able to go back and retrieve them. Hopefully this would work like we need unless we follow your steps.

Iron chef we are just looking for images so file names would be great.

Thanks, guys
