I think secure erase is overkill except in all but the rarest of cases.

Writing zeros, one time, is going to foil 99.999999% of anyone who might stumble upon a hard drive. Unless you have something on the hard drive that could lead to death or incarceration in with the general population...

Something else I don't get...(not that I'm advocating the protection of child pornographers,) but...

Just use Filevault with an unguessable password. The files are encrypted and the cops would be S.O.L.

It's just for the piece of mind.

This machine, which I'm selling, was my work machine. It has (had) a lot of sensitive data on it.

Not that someone is going to take the hard drive out and ship it off to Drivesavers and try and get something off of it or anything.

Then, there are people like me.

I sweet-talked the attendant at the HazMat drop-off spot to give me an iMac DV that had just been brought in.

I pulled the hard drive, and put it in my iMac. All sorts of his info (bank, medical, retirement accounts, household, SS#, etc) was available to me.

I got the owner's name, looked him up in the local phone book and called him. I let him know my name, and how I came into possession of his old Mac. Told him that it'd be a simple matter to transfer all the data on the HD I now had onto his new computer. He said he already had. I left my name and phone number and assured him that I would destroy all data.

I hung up and immediately wiped the drive.
