My powerbook died. Well, not really. The battery doesn't charge when I put in the charge and I have my thesis on it. Mac person says I need to pay for a new motherboard to get a new power plug. $1100 for a new mother board to replace a 5$ plug? I wanted to smack him.
Does anyone have any alternative suggestions?

I agree with Bryan. It's probably a broken solder joint. Can be fixed with a $10 solder iron and a couple of cents worth of solder.

FYI, I did this with my wife's iBook. It was a pain to take apart and now I have six screws left over after putting it back together, but it works just fine.
