I have never posted and I do not know why I havn't. I have an old iPod that I would like to fix up and leave in the RAV. I have the orginal iPod in the 5GB model. The hard drive clicks loud and the sad iPod face comes up everytime. Has anyone replaced the Hard Drive in these. I have been able to get inside it in the past. I did not mind carfully opening after I got a new iPod Photo. I want to go be cheep with fixing it. Thanks. I will have to start posting. You seem like a fun group. :-)<br><br>www.patgamble.com

Use Google to find MacUser in the UK, free registration, do a search on the Ipod. Here's a quote:<br><br>"Choosing a replacement hard disk is a tricky business. Apple uses modified Toshiba drives in its iPods and so using a generic replacement will not work in a FireWire iPod. It's because the first couple megs on the drive are write blocked so you need the info from that part of the partition.<br><br>The 1st gen were also Mac Formatted only.<br><br>Those two bits are just guesses though.<br><br>Googling all of this would probably provide some good backup and I think it's discussed on ipodlounge<br><br>WWW.ADZOOX.COM & www.JACKWHISPERS.COM

Ah- gotcha...<br><br>So swapping in a new drive to a 3G shouldn't provide any such problems, should it? I would think the iPod Software updater would take care of any formatting problems, regardless of the generation...
