Would someone please explain Apple's marketing strategy to me. I'm baffled. I'm sure Apple would like a bigger share of the personal computer market, but I don't see them doing much about it. Why don't they take a page from Dell. Dell advertises every day in the local newspapers. I've never seen an Apple ad in any of the papers. Another thing, for a while now Dells have come with 128 megs of video ram and 16x dvd burners. iMacs come with only 64 megs of video ram and 8x superdrives. There's rumour of new iMacs coming next month. I'll be disappointed, but not surprised if they still come with 64 megs of video ram and 8x dvd burners.

First of all, welcome to MM!!!!

In reply to:

Would someone please explain Apple's marketing strategy to me.

Drink the koolaid

In reply to:

Why don't they take a page from Dell. Of course, you can claim that Apple would have more money to spend on advertising if they sold more machines, and do to that they should advertise in the local papers. But it comes down to this: National TV spots and National Magazine ads are more effective than local paper ads when it comes to the iMac demographic. Apple probably is shooting for more bang for their buck.

In reply to:

Another thing, for a while now Dells have come with 128 megs of video ram and 16x dvd burners. iMacs come with only 64 megs of video ram and 8x superdrives.

A very good question indeed. If Apple really wants to push gamers and amateur content creators, than they really should do this for some of the models. I don't necessarily think the entire iMac line should go this route, but the higher models should.
The power users know how to get upgraded stuff put into the computer and at a much more reasonable price than Apple offers. So it really doesn't harm anyone, though I'll grant you that on paper, it just plain don't look as good.

I think because Apple would like more marketshare, but it's not their number one goal, nor should it be.

Apple is a successful company because they make better products. Better usually costs more money. Apple could make crap and be able to seel it as cheap as Dell and have lots of money left over for marketing, but you'd be getting crap from Apple. What's the point of buying from Apple if you get crap?

That's the difference right there. Dell will compromise the quality and user experience of their products to get more sales. Apple will not.

Apple used to have a bigger share of the PC market, and they also use to lose billions a year.

The fact is, of new machine sales, the Mac market is 2% of all PCs sold. Apple makes a profit because we drink the Kool Aid and pay the outrageous prices. Budget-conscious spec shoppers will get a PC.

I always manage to take great pleasure in telling someone, "No, you can't" when they ask me if they can do video editing on their $400 Dell like I can on my Mac...

[color:red]5.19.05 - The 'Jedi Slaughter' tour begins!
