Two important things to keep in mind when determining your hourly rate is first, the cost of running the business, from what we talked about above to vehicle expense, tools and toys, diagnostic software, those are my biggest. Second is taxes. 15.3% of profit, after expenses but before deductions, for SS and Medicare, plus any state, local, federal. So all depending on what bracket you're in around 30% give or take, usually take, of your hourly charge is not yours due to taxes. Plus with the cost of running the show fiigure at least a total of 50% of what what you charge isn't really yours. Not trying to discourage you, nothing is better than working for yourself. Going to work never sucks. Just charge accordingly. Don't under price yourself just to get started, they'll always expect it.

Now go find that stick.

"Yeah, I'm the worlds worst at wanting to give people a discount. It's bitten me in the ass on more than one occasion."

Discounts are for friends and even then, be careful. I use to feel the same as you but I've gotten over it. Once in a while, I'll help out long-time clients who've given me a lot of business over the years but any first-time client who starts trying to haggle me down right from the start, I walk away from. It never gets better, they only expect more and more discounts. Or worse yet, the ones who try the old "so-and-so charges less than you so why should I pay your rate?" ploy. If the person who charges the least dictates the going rate, we'll all be working for minimum wage.

Don't get me started.
