I don't know how to tweak a mac to DL faster, but...

If you live in a house, put your DSL modem right beside the point where the telephone connection enters your house. When I moved my modem into the garage (that's where the telephone line enters our house) I got an easy 100Kbps improvement.

Make sure your browser is completely up to date.

There is a program that removes website location bar icons - forgot the name

Programs that remove or pause gif ad images help

Blocking pop up windows help

On the hardware end - in SOME cases the modem brand name can make a difference.

Make sure you have quality cables with good insulation (such as ethernet)

Try checking the noise ratio on your line - MAYBE you could use a signal booster

The program Speed Download may help

WWW.ADZOOX.COM & www.JACKWHISPERS.COM
Im still getting lag on a lot of sites for like 10 secs before the page loads. Its starting to make me angry, ths isnt normal is it? Maybe I should get a new modem or just shell out for comcast.

Unlike on the Windows side, there are no DSL tweaks.

If the browser is taking a long time to "find" sites, then I would think that is a DNS lookup situation or something.

Are you using Safari or Firefox? Do you have filters on all the lines with telephones? How's the copper between you and the network interface box on the side of the house?

Like Jonnycat says...the 3 most important things with DSL are distance, distance, distance.

Check out broadbandreports for speed tests and forums where people have similar issues.

The strange thing is sometimes it doesnt do it and sometimes it does. Maybe its just the cold weather in Mass. I am using safari. Yes i have filters on the lines that have phones. This site always lags, its my start up page

http://www.apple.com/startpage/

Also, i did a test and it said my speed is 1224.56 kbps

The pages load fast, its just the lag before it loads on a lot of sites, thats the problem.

If you're in Mass and have Verizon, you might have the same trouble we have here in NH with Verizon. Their DNS server is really slow which is causing sites to load slowly because it can't lookup the server and find it fast.

yes im in mass.
It must be the DNS since once it goes to the page it usually loads really fast.
So there is no way of fixing this then ?
Edited by gnfnr2k on 04/02/05 07:04 PM (server time).

Thanks for the info I googled DNS and Ma and i got some help.
If anyone from Ma is having this problem they should switch their DNS to

199.45.32.40
199.45.32.41

IT seems to be working, the looked up is much faster now.

"Unlike on the Windows side, there are no DSL tweaks."

This is 100% wrong. One can tweak anything they want, and even MORE than with Windows. The Darwin source is available for all, the UNIX backend is extremely customizable.

If you don't want to mess around in the Terminal than get Broadband Optimizer.
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/12591
