Hollywood has become so bad, I've given up on spec scripts. Predictability is the answer and curse. Script readers will down grade a script for not being original, but the production manager will complain that it's too original.

People want
the hero to live
happy endings
the girl and guy to fall in love
the bad guy to die
the 'whatever' to be saved
all loose ends tied up
characters must have an arc
the hero mustn't be too manly
the woman can't be too white
the subject matter can't be too real

and they tell you things with 'nobody' in it.
Nobody:
makes period pieces. I hear ya... but after seeing movies like:

"Fat Girl"
French subtitled film about a little fat girl. While on family vacation, she watches her older sister lose her virginity. The family learns what happened and ends the vacation. While sleeping at a rest area, a random thug smashes the windshield and beats the sister and mother to death with a crow bar, then proceeds to rape the little "fat girl" in the woods. The end. ((Seriously))

"Happiness"
William H. Macy as a pedophile. And the value in it is...?

"In The Company Of Men"
In a latently homoerotic contest, two guys torment a deaf women.

"Chuck & Buck"
In a no-qualms homoerotic movie... a really smarmy creepy gay guy gets back in touch with an old high school buddy to seduce him.

"The Guest"
A dutch/subtitled film about a man who returns home for a family reunion and decides it's the perfect opportunity to reveal Dad molested the kids.

After "cutting edge" cinema like that, I'll always be thankful for mediocre drivel...

--------------------
