A year or so ago I picked up a copy of “A Terry Teachout Reader” and after reading his essay on Nancy Lamott I bought a couple of her CDs from Amazon.com. I was knocked over by her talent. She does things with a song that I’ve never heard from anyone else. She was known mostly in the New York area as a superb and up and coming cabaret singer, but tragically she died of uterine cancer at the age of 41. I can hardly listen to her without my eyes tearing up.

Terry Teachout did another column about her in the WSJ of 2/9/05. Another of her CDs, “Live from Tavern on the Green” has just been released. I promptly ordered that, too.

If you can, read Terry’s essay. There’s more about her here, also And unless you have a heart of stone and ears of tin, you’ll be inspired by her life, as I was.

This is from her CD "What's Good About Goodbye?"

<EMBED SRC="http://idisk.mac.com/willross/Public/downtown excerpt.mov", WIDTH=300, HEIGHT=15 CONTROLLER=TRUE AUTOPLAY=FALSE
