Gmail just offered me POP access, which they're gradually rolling out....Yahoo charges for this, as does .Mac and Hotmail offers something like it, but only if you use Entourage or Outlook. <br><br>With this quote, I will never use any other webmail again:<br><br>"POP access is free for all Gmail users and we have no plans to charge."<br><br><br><br><br><br>

Yahoo's POP access is $20 a year- I signed up for a year to try it, but now all of sudden my ISP is blocking my ability to send through an external mail client...<br><br>Therefore I can still receive, but I have to send using my ISP's settings. Bummer. Looks like I will be canceling at the end of my year. <br><br>[color:red]C'mon...you know me.</font color=red>
I don't subscribe to .Mac for email alone. You'd be a fool to do that. And .Mac doesn't use my email to advertise to me.<br><br>But, I agree, POP access is great for GMail users. If you like GMail, that is a bonus.<br><br><br><br>

Cox Communications also doesn't allow 3rd party SMTP access, so you have to use theirs, but I just set my "From" address to my domain email in the prefs and nobody knows the difference.<br><br>

By the way, for anyone that is setting up Gmail's pop access, it uses Port 995 to receive mail, so if you have your firewall turned on, open that port <br><br><br><br><br><br>

don't all modern macs come with an smtp server these days? why worry about your ISP's mail servers when you can just pop to retrieve g-mail whatever, and send out using your own? Or are the relays not configured to allow this?<br><br>Can anyone confirm/reject this (that's actually tried it, not just guessing)... I'll try it sometime with my machine, but I only use webmail, so i really don't have much use for smtp,<br><br>neye<br><br>

Well, I'm using it, so it's not too good to be true. I understand what you're saying, but I tend to trust Google. <br><br>I also have a Yahoo account, which I use for their calendar, notepad and other features. <br><br>
