In reply to:

Not only did Kerry win by an 86-13 margin among self-described liberals, he also won by a 55-45 margin among self-described moderates. So how'd Bush pull it off? He won 84-15 among self-described conservatives, and, more importantly, he made sure conservatives comprised a much bigger chunk of the electorate than they did in 2000. (Conservatives comprised about 34 percent of the electorate yesterday, versus 29 percent in 2000 -- a huge shift, raw numbers-wise.) Anyone anticipating a conciliatory second Bush term should stop and consider how much Bush owes his base.

--
one of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors. -Plato

And the fact several states had issues like a gay marriage ban that brought out his religious right base to the polls.

no doubt, they did come out to vote; however, i can't see any states that had the gay marriage ban that went for gore in 2000 that switched to dubya in 2004. i could be wrong, but i know that oregon, pennsylvania and michigan went for kerry and they had the amendment on the ballot. go figure.

--
one of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors. -Plato

I think we just need to find a way to keep men from voting. the exit polls were wrong but they weren't radically wrong. ie., they had Kerry winning ohio by 1 or 2 points, when he lost it by that amount. so they probably are pretty close to correct on the other issues.

the most interesting one to me was dubya breaking 40% among hispanics. combine that with dubya's convincing win with the elderly. wow! Kerry really bungled the elderly vote i think.

the early exit polls were what really came out as losers yesterday. in the past, the trends from early typically held on. not yesterday. early exit poll results were pretty far off, but the end numbers weren't that "infamous."

--
one of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors. -Plato

No, but it was a win, and one of the nice things about winning is that you get to spin the results the way you want. The Democrats would have done exactly the same thing.

Salus populi suprema lex

I'm sorry. I thought you were referencing the way the Republicans have been crowing about Bush winning such a huge popular vote. My mistake. I need to read more carefully.

Salus populi suprema lex
