Okay, so as was determined in this thread, I had loaded some fonts that my system didn't like. I deleted them (I thought), but I'm still having problems:

So what gives? I've run Font Cache Cleaner, to no avail. I deleted all the fonts from my user folder. I don't know what else to try. the font folders in the system library seem to be okay.

Is there a way I can just restore the condition of my fonts to sort of a "virgin" state? Without doing an archive and install?

OS X gets/uses fonts from many locations, its one of the most confusing things in OS X

fonts from OS 9's system folder
fonts from from the main Library folder
font from your home folder Library

then font book?
suitcase?

From Kurt Lang at Apple discussions

In reply to:

Users>your_user_name>Library>Fonts
Library>Fonts
Network>Library>Fonts
System>Library>Fonts
System Folder>Fonts (the OS 9 Fonts folder)

(Source: Apple Knowledge Base article 106417).

What i did was dump the fonts into Font Book. I think that I then selected to let all users have access to the fonts. I guess I should have just put them into my fonts folder.

Hmm, I'm going to log into a different account and see if I still have the issue.

Adobe also creates font folders for a few of their apps (InDesign, Acrobat, Distiller), perhaps it's one of those.

However, if you got that text from an email or the internet, or a Windows-saved RTF file, many times it garbles apostrophes, commas and other punctuation.

Nope, those examples are from right here at MacMinute. I was surfing using Safari... haven't tried any of my other browsers yet.

And it seems only to show up in Safari (i.e. not Mail or AppleWorks). Maybe when I go home I'll take a look and see if I can't find a fonts folder just for Safari. It sure didn't seem to be anything with the preferences.

Can I just delete the Safari.plist -- or whatever it's called -- file like I would have done in OS 9?

Deleting [color:blue]com.apple.Safari.plist caused my fonts to go back to normal.

Whew.

You can all go back about your business now.
