Last night my mac crashed (froze) and I had to turn it off by holding the power button for 5 seconds. I picked up on trying to resolve it this morning and no go - the mac won't start.

I have a PowerMac dual G4 MDD with a cinema display. When I power on it gives me the Macintosh start up sound, I hear the disks chug for about 3 seconds then it gets a little quieter. The power light on the cinema display is on but the screen is blank.

What do I do next/first?

Thanks much-
Steven

--
http://www.stevenkimband.com/
Edited by skim1420 on 10/26/04 10:50 AM (server time).

Hmm, try holding [command]-[option]-O-F at startup. This will get you into Open Firmware. At the prompt, type:

reset-nvram[return]
reset-all[return]

The machine should then re-boot. Still happening? Let us know.

Thanks, so I did that and exactly the same thing happens.

I never get the prompt, the screen actually never lights up (beside the power light).

--
http://www.stevenkimband.com/
So you "start it", hear the "bong".
Now wait 5-10 minutes.
If you hit the volumn up/volumn down keys do you hear the sounds doing that?

No sig right now, waiting for the next Kerry flip-flop. .

Yes! Also the CD-ROM eject button on the keyboard works too..

The screen is still blank (with the power button/light on), and when I press the power button it doesn't sleep correctly - the light remains on (rather than glowing on and off).

Otherwise the system seems to be functioning. What was the keyboard sequence at the login screen to select a user without using the mouse?

Thanks for the help -

--
http://www.stevenkimband.com/

The mac is also serving up web pages on its webserver.. so I guess it is started up.

I tried reseating the display connection, still the same. Do you think my cinema display is dead?

But the thing is, the computer won't sleep correctly either...

--
http://www.stevenkimband.com/

Yes. So I plugged in a CRT through the Apple-supplied adapter, and it doesn't get a signal.

I managed to log myself (blind) through the keyboard, so I'm logged in now. I have quicksilver running so I can run applications. Any ideas?

Thanks -

--
http://www.stevenkimband.com/
