...but I'd like to try out other fonts in my Finder interface...for menu items and desktop item names. I'm particularly enamored of Trebuchet right now. That's the place where I ask your biggest forgiveness. I just find it crisp, clean and easy on my aging eyes.

I've looked at ResExcellence, OS X Hints, and tried to muck through Apple's KB, but just can't seem to find out how (umm...as quickly as I'd like to be able to find it.) I know it can be done, because I remember seeing a tip about how, but I have no recollection about where I saw it.

I'd be a happy Maccer if somebody could point me toward what I need to do to experiment.

Easy. You need Unsanity Silk - $10 (freeware version doesn't work with Panther)

Features:

Substitutes fonts in the applications.

Changes the default theme font to any other font.

Enforces the minimum font size setting.

Enables the Quartz text rendering in all running Carbon applications, such as Netscape, Mozilla and many others.

Exclude list feature allows you to exclude certain applications so they work as before, if the antialiased text there looks bad.

Convenient drop button in the Silk preference pane to quickly detect if a particular application is Carbon or not.

Implemented as an easy-to-use preference pane.

Big appreciation for the detailed reply, James, but as rarely as I might change things, I think I want to learn how to do it manually, and keep the Haxies off my system.

Any recommendations in that vein?

There is no way to do it manually that I know of. If there was, I'm sure it would have been all over the place by now. I suppose you could manually edit Lucida Grande and replace the original versions on your computer, but I don't even think that will work.

I will say this. There are VERY FEW fonts that look good being used in the whole System, and every font I've used has problems displaying correctly in one app or another.

I know this is no solution but do you wear progressive lenses? Just curious since you are less than a year older than I am. I have to have reading glasses with my contacts and regular glasses have to be progressive or I am lost. Sucks being a girl because it's hard to pluck eyebrows and apply make up. It was an epiphany the day I tried someone's reading glasses and realized what the problem was.
