July 10 - 15:52 ET: Following yesterday's report from Quality Education Data that predicted Apple will regain the top spot in the education space this year, Dell has come out disputing the numbers. "We believe we're well-positioned to retain our leadership position in the U.S. and we don't expect that to change," said Dell spokesman Dean Kline. Dell pointed out an IDC report that showed Dell's market share in education has grown to 34 percent while Apple's has dropped to 22 percent. Meanwhile, IDC senior analyst David Daoud said that Apple's new iBook has helped it pick up sales but that dislodging Dell from the stop spot may prove very difficult.

How do you feel about the issue?
The real numbers should be computers in use, not how many P(ieces of) C(rap) were sold.

Computers in use might be what we care about, but when Wall Street measures the health of a company, what they look at is units shipped, not in use. They need to keep that revenue a-comin'.

As to the larger question: I want to scoff at these market share contests, but the fact is Apple desperately needs the education market. Last year was a huge blunder.

By the way, the headline should read "disputes," not "refutes." "Refute" means "to prove wrong (successfully)."
