I just figured out the whole CBS document situation, and I now realize the explanation is simple.

Obviously, Dan Rather has invented the time machine. After creating his invention, he took his laptop (we can only hope it was a Mac,) back 30 years and got Killian to type his anti-Bush memos in Microsoft Word. 'Ole Dan must've really turned heads in Texas with that newfangled computer of the future.

My only question for Dan Rather is this: Can I borrow your time machine? Just once would be all I needed....

from the dallas morning news (pay site... sorry)

the documents are likely fakes (and bad ones at that), but this woman's recollections might save dan rather's ass.

In reply to:

HOUSTON - The former secretary for the Texas Air National Guard colonel who supposedly authored memos critical of President Bush’s Guard service said Tuesday that the documents are fake, but that they reflect real documents that once existed.

Marian Carr Knox, who worked from 1956 to 1979 at Ellington Air Force Base in Houston, said she prided herself on meticulous typing, and the memos first disclosed by CBS News last week were not her work.

“These are not real,” she told The Dallas Morning News after examining copies of the disputed memos for the first time. “They’re not what I typed, and I would have typed them for him.”

Mrs. Knox, 86, who spoke with precise recollection about dates, people and events, said she is not a supporter of Mr. Bush, who she deemed “unfit for office” and “selected, not elected.”

“I remember very vividly when Bush was there and all the yak-yak that was going on about it,” she said.
But, she said, telltale signs of forgery abounded in the four memos, which contained the supposed writings of her ex-boss, Lt. Col. Jerry Killian, who died in 1984.

Also Online
Memos released by CBS </sharedcontent/dws/news/washington/elections2004/stories/090904dnpolmemos.fae722ba.html>

She said the typeface on the documents did not match either of the two typewriters that she used during her time at the Guard. She identified those machines as a mechanical Olympia, which was replaced by an IBM Selectric in the early 1970s.

She spoke fondly of the Olympia machine, which she said had a key with the “th” superscript character that was the focus of much debate in the CBS memos. Experts have said that the Selectric, and mechanical typewriters such as the Olympia, could not produce proportional spacing, found in the disputed documents.

CBS officials have defended their report. They have declined to say who provided 60 Minutes with the documents, other than that it was an “unimpeachable source” - or exactly where they came from, other than Lt. Col. Killian’s “personal file.”

The memos, if real, would show that as a pilot, Mr. Bush defied a direct order to obtain a flight physical, enjoyed the benefit of pressure from high officials to “sugar coat” his record, and was grounded for failing to meet military performance standards.

Mrs. Knox said she did all of Lt. Col. Killian’s typing, including memos for a personal “cover his back” file he kept in a locked drawer of his desk.

She said she did not recall typing the memos reported by CBS News, though she said they accurately reflect the viewpoints of Lt. Col. Killian and documents that would have been in the personal file. Also, she could not say whether the CBS documents corresponded memo for memo with that file.

“The information in here was correct, but it was picked up from the real ones,” she said.

She said that the culture of the time was that men didn’t type office-related documents, and she expressed doubt that Lt. Col. Killian would have typed the memos. She said she would typically type his memos from his handwritten notes, which she would then destroy.

Mrs. Knox, who left the Guard before Lt. Col. Killian died, said she was not sure of the disposition of his personal files when he died while still serving at Ellington. But, she said, it would have been logical that a master sergeant who worked in the squadron headquarters would have destroyed any such nonofficial documents after Lt. Col. Killian’s death.

That man, reached Tuesday, declined to comment. “I don’t know anything about the matter,” he said.

She also said the memos may have been constructed from memory by someone who had seen Lt. Col. Killian’s private file but were not transcriptions because the language and terminology did not match what he would have used.

For instance, she said, the use of the words “billets” and a reference to the “administrative officer” of Mr. Bush’s squadron reflect Army terminology rather than the Air National Guard. Some news reports attribute the CBS reports to a former Army National Guard officer who has a longstanding dispute with the Guard and has previously maintained that the president’s record was sanitized.

Mrs. Knox also cited stylistic differences in the form of the notes, such as the signature on the right side of the document, rather than the left, where she would have put it.

--
one of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors. -Plato

Right, because she has a "recollection", Dan Rather and CBS using forged documents that are easily shown to be fake get a pass on journalistic integrity?
And who scoops CBS? Drudge! The ultimate insult to the main stream media.

Seriously Sean, last Wednesday would Rather have put on that 60 minutes piece if his "evidence" was that Bush's now dead commanding officers' secretary has a recollection of typing some memos?
Dan: "Do you recall typing a memo 32 years ago where Killian states he being pressured to rate Bush favorably?"
Dan: "Do you recall typing a memo 32 years ago where Killian is giving Bush a direct order to get his physical almost a full two months before regulations require him to?"

And so on. It's not about the fake contents. The questions raised by the fake contents are not new except for the "order" to go to the physical.
It's about CBS's integrity and reliability of which they now have little.

Dean Davis

-----
"I think it was the right decision to disarm Saddam Hussein. And when the president made the decision, I supported him, and I support the fact that we did disarm him." -- John Kerry (D) - May 3, 2003

In reply to:

Right, because she has a "recollection",

and, john kerry's "recollection" from even earlier gets no equal free pass?

i think dan rather will eventually say that he was duped, but that the content of the memos was the bottom line and on that merit, he was spot on. perhaps that will save face for him. i have a feeling that you and other hard-line conservatives hated him already, so there's no love lost. i wish i could tell you that this means i'll no longer watch CBS news, but the network news was never something i watched and my life has been better because of it.

i honestly don't feel the need to defend rather. i just don't care. i just want the focus to turn to the content of the memo instead of the diversionary tactics that will be used to turn it to rather.

--
one of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors. -Plato

In reply to:

john kerry's "recollection" from even earlier gets no equal free pass?

Apple's and oranges. Kerry's recollections get weighed against others recollections by people who witnessed the same event. His recollection is also in question when he says some of his recollection which is seared in his memory is easily contradicted by reports of his whereabouts.

Here we have one person's recollection and nothing to weigh against it.
Of course her recollection isn't typing these specific memos or even the specific content of the memos. Her recollection is of the spirit of the memos...
Killian was "angry" (for lack of a better word) at Bush.
There was a general feeling that many of the pilots in the unit got special treatment.

Those are valid questions but the fake memos can't provide ANY answer to the questions. The secretaries recollections can bear some weight but a two-times removed heresy recollection has to given proper weight.

So nothing has changed from before the CBS story from last Wednesday. Those who think Bush was AWOL and got special treatment before Wednesday still believe it and those who did not were probably not swayed.

But her recollection can in no way restore CBSs credibility. And the "we got duped" excuse no longer holds water. Very serious questions about the memos authenticity were proposed three hours after the story aired. If CBS has launched an investigation the next day instead of digging in their heals they would have been ok. CBS should have properly authenticated the memos and interviewed the family and the secretary and probably a bunch of other before airing the story if they wanted to resurrect it.

Dean Davis

-----
"I think it was the right decision to disarm Saddam Hussein. And when the president made the decision, I supported him, and I support the fact that we did disarm him." -- John Kerry (D) - May 3, 2003
