okay, i just looked quickly, but i don't see a word processor on the new iMac. are they expecting people to use text edit for word processing? that's asking a bit much in a world revolving around microsoft. sure, they can buy Word, but that's just another expense to tack on to the price. don't most competitors (e.g., dell) deliver their machines with at least a watered down version of Word and office (e.g., Works)? pretty big omission, imho.

"Tribal sovereignty means that, it's sovereign. I have the full copy of Appleworks 6 that came with my iMac, and I never use it. In fact, it's not even on my computer.

For word processing, I use Text Edit, and I even use it to save word docs when I need to send something like a resume, or whatever.

It has everything I need. Like Trog said, Appleworks has been dead for years. It's a complete POS.

oh, i think appleworks sux, fwiw.

however, i helped a family switch about 2 year ago and they use appleworks religiously. the mom uses if for all of her scrap-booking stuff and they use it to make invitations to their parties, etc. i am fairly amazed at how much use they got out of it and how little need they've had for Word. text edit certainly is not a tool for making newsletter-type things, etc.

"Tribal sovereignty means that, it's sovereign. i hate it as well. any time i get a document made with it, i reply to the student and force them to save as an RTF . . . i just want to make them jump through and extra hoop so they know that Works is the work of the devil.

"Tribal sovereignty means that, it's sovereign.
In reply to:

It's a complete POS

I have Appleworks and use it for things that can't be done with TextEdit. I also have InDesign, the first version of which came with my computer, and Office 2001 which was given to me. I never use either one of them, preferring the simplicity of Appleworks. IMO, Appleworks 5 was better than 6 and Apple should have left well enough alone for they certainly didn't improve it.

So what would you suggest for software, that has Appleworks capability and price, should Appleworks be abandoned?

In reply to:

Unfortunately I think Keynote is next

You're a little late in that statement. Keynote was dead by the time it shipped!

It's a cute little program, but its feature set is so weak that it had no hope of enticing even semi-pro users from using PowerPoint.

But the one (non) feature that killed Keynote before it even got started was that in order to view all the nice graphics Keynote can produce, you have to actually have Keynote. Exporting as PowerPoint kills everything, and you can't use a movie in a live presentation. Since 90% of the business presentation world uses Windows, anything Apple does with this app MUST export seamlessly (and feature complete) to Windows.
