In reply to:

You do realize a Mazda RX-8 6speed is rated at putting 9.3 tons of pollutants into the air annualy, where a Chevy Tahoe AWD on E85 is rated to put 8.9? :P

The Rx-8 for a 1.3 liter engine is a horrible polluter because it has to burn oil in the combustion chamber.

That regrettably, despite all the performance enhancements, has always been the problem with the Wankel Rotary Engine. I was really surprised to hear that Mazda was releasing the Rx engine again—even more so that it was within pollution standards when that was why it went away in the first place.

I'm with you Sgt. It's the regulatory standards that are lax, not the taxes. Consumer Reports did a story how Subaru raised the Outback Legacy chassis one inch to bring it into light utility vehicle status instead of passenger vehicle status so they wouldn't have to bring it in line with toughening standards for passenger cars.

Why? Because all of the things that cause this increase (i.e. less interal friction, better airflow, etc) also equate into a cleaner burning engine. Damn, we should require all cars to come with a supercharger, as putting one on a car frequently translates to better emissions and gas mileage.
