Guys, I'm trying to rename the Finder (in Mac OS 8.6) to "Desktop". Why? Because I don't want to tell my wife that clicking on the desktop switches you back to the Finder ("the what??"). Besides, it's called Desktop in Mac OS X anyway!

I've tried renaming the "Finder" file to "Desktop" and ResEditing the System file as well (there's a "STR#" with "Finder" in it and a "boot" hex resource as well) but on restart I hit a crash in the Time Synchroniser extension. I could just disable it, and any others that may crash as well, but is there another way or something I've missed? I've checked out ResExcellence and no luck. Frankly, I'm wondering if TreeBeard's done this before already! "Anyone? Anyone? The tariff bill..." (Ferris Bueller's Day Off)

It would be MUCH easier to just teach your wife the concept that the desktop is a folder in the finder, and while your at it, show her that if you also click on any file icons and/or folder windows, it will also bring the finder to the front. FORGET RENAMING THE FINDER, THAT IS JUST ASKING FOR TROUBLE.

[color:red]-- John Bailey ( [color:red]Bdog )

[color:blue]Email Me! [color:green]bdog_111@yahoo.com

Trouble's my middle name - no, wait, it's actually Reginald... my mistake... This issue is becoming like Everest though - I just want to do it "because it's there" now! Everything looks serene from a height of 1353 feet...

Impossible, simply because every single application that makes a Finder call, that sends an AppleEvent through the Finder, won't know what to do.

The main areas these calls are made from aren't simple strings in STR's, but in the code itself which isn't so easily hackable.

BTW, the Time Synchroniser crash isn't actually the Time Synchroniser - disabling it won't help. Its the Finder. Type 41. Bad stuff, corrupt Finder.

Cipher13

Take a black permenent maker, and next to the application menu, write "finder=desktop" :-)

[color:red]-- John Bailey ( [color:red]Bdog )

[color:blue]Email Me! [color:green]bdog_111@yahoo.com

Seems to me that when Norton Utilities ran out of room for their "Emergency Repair Disk" in the bad old days when we used floppy disks that they put only a System file and Norton Disk Doctor on floppy. They changed name of Disk Doctor to "Finder" causing the System to load/launch it. Can't recall if System file required hacking.

Here is what I just thought of Alex! Make an alias to the "Finder" in the system folder, name the "Finder" to "Desktop" and then name that alias "Finder". See if that works, and you can also make the alias invisible 2!!!

--John Bailey( [color:red]Bdog )

Email Me ---> bdog_111@yahoo.com

I really doubt this will work, or even come close to it, since the "Finder" really should be present for the System Folder to be "blessed".... hmmm... perhaps a good idea, but I really don't think it'll work... best of luck...

Perhaps you should try making your "Finder" invisible and then making an alias to it called "Desktop" and running it that way... then at least the real Finder is still called the Finder... etc.. etc...

doubt that'll work either, but hey, it's your mac....
