I have never seen this addressed, but I use Classic daily in OSX 10.1.5. So do the processes the computer performs at night take care of the rebuilding of the desktop and that type of thing? I guess after years of using Macs it is hard to believe there is no maintenance. I don't use MacJanitor much because I leave the computer on at night and I was under the impression if it is on for lengthy periods of time the Unix part does some of the clean up itself. I do log out & back in once in a while if things start getting hincky. Which rarely happens. I think I have had 3 freezes prompting an emergency restart since March and most were related to sleep mode. Just curious as to whether I am supposed to be doing more. The beauty of OSX.

Cheers, iRock
There are two major products that come out of Berkeley: LSD and [Unix] BSD. We don't believe this to be a coincidence.
Jeremy S. Anderson

I don't think that the Unix stuff will do the desktop rebuilding in Classic--but don't know for certain. It just seems unlikely since the process would be taking place for a system that's not the boot system. But what do I know?!

On the other hand, I do know an interesting word when I see one. "Hincky"?? Where does that come from?

Great wits are sure to madness near allied.--John Dryden, "Absalom and Achitophel"

I doubt that it does it on its own, which is why there is an option to rebuild the desktop in the Classic pane of the system preferences. If you hadn't seen it it is (in Jag) in the Advanced Tab of the pane, but if I remember right for 10.1 there is only one tab, but its at the bottom. Or is there two, I can't remember already, but I know the option is there. Rebuild away... just like the old days.

By the way, what do you mean "the processes the computer performs at night"? What is my computer doing without my knowledge when I'm asleep?

The Cron scripts that OSX runs nightly, weekly and monthly DO NOT affect classic at all. Those scripts are somewhat disk related in that they clean out the logs, etc... No desktop rebuiling is done via those scripts. You can rebuild the Classic desktop in the Classic prefs pane if you choose - you don't even have to have classic running.

On a side note, if you upgrade to Jaguar, you will see a fairly significant speed-up of Classic. Just a thought.

[color:red]What? I don't understand. What?

Oh, well, I suppose it could have been this kitten running around destroying my house, but I assure you that my Powerbook has always had a surreptitious side to it.

By the way, what the heck are Cron scripts? I have never heard of them, and do I have any control over them?

hincky - odd, strange behavior pertaining to files, software or computer hardware. Slang.
Thanks everyone, I had seen this when I poked through the preferences when I was first learning OSX and then forgot it. I knew there was something.
But then we got some entertainment and a little learnin' out of the thread so glad I posted.

Cheers, iRock
There are two major products that come out of Berkeley: LSD and [Unix] BSD.
