yes. started with extentions off to boot up and drop in new extention to try. it didn't work. any other suggestions rather than a clean re-install. I would rather not have to do that, especially since i can't use my cd drive.

Things to try;

1. Go to Extensions Manager and set it to Mac OS 9.1 all and reboot.

2. Put a bootable CD in, like the OS install CD, reboot and hold down the Shift key to turn off extensions, but since you have a bootable CD in it will load the CD driver from the CD. Since it will load the driver the CD should mount on the desktop.

If it does mount that means the CD drive is good, and it's probably an Extension conflict or corruption.

3. If the CD doesn't mount reboot again and after the chime hold down the C key and keep holding to see if it will boot from the CD.

If it does boot from the CD the drive is defintely good. You would then want to do a reinstall. In 9.1 there is an option to reinstall over what you have, it won't lose any data. Also the nice part about 9.1 is it replaces every Apple Extension and system part and piece. It was a complete update.

4. If it won't boot from the CD reboot again and Zap the PRAM, after the chime hold down Apple-Option-P-R till you hear the startup chime again, then try the CD boot again, C key.

HTH
