Pardon my ignorance but I'm not sure I get this.

I use OS X.
Which is Unix.
No, it's FreeBSD...or is that OpenBSD? Which is ...err what, exactly?
No wait, it's Darwin. What on earth is Darwin?
And if it's Darwin, then it can't be Unix. Or can it?
But, I read somewhere it's actually Mach. Or the kernel is anyway. What does that mean?
It sounds as if OS X is some other non-Apple operating system with an Apple GUI glued on to the top.
Is that correct?

Can somebody please enlighten me (in layman's language if possible) because I don't know how to explain this to my daughter, or my colleagues, and I hate that.

Thanks in advance for any light you might shed on this that will bring me the glimmer of understanding I so fervently crave.

Cheers,
M1.

i can't explain all of it though...
OS X is well, the GUI.
It is based on The BSD distribution of UNIX.
other distrubutions of UNIX are yellowdog, redhat, stuff like that.
i don't know what the hell darwin or mach is

someone else can explain..

rakka

Great Day!

Because it was written on LSD. You're not supposed to understand it.
When you get a kernel panic it's a real bad trip.

Cheers, iRock
There are two major products that come out of Berkeley: LSD and [Unix] BSD. We don't believe this to be a coincidence.
Jeremy S. Anderson

I know that OS X is the Berkly version of FreeBSD and that is a variation of Unix. Linux is a different variation of Unix from BSD, things like yellow dog and mandrake are Linux. And yes apple did take a non-apple OS and stick more layer ontop of that like the GUI. Other than that my knowlege is very limited on the subject. oh well.....

Take some time and read ALL about it HERE. Make sure you follow the links for further explanations. I have to read it about twice a month... and it still doesn't sink in!

But... OS X sure is nice!

Alec
Darwin is the Mach 3.0 kernel which is open-source and based on Unix. Aqua is the GUI built on top of Darwin (Kind of like Windows is/was the GUI for DOS)

[color:red]semicolon dash parenthesis
