A fuel oil tanker truck crashed<br>on an elevated section of Interstate 95 Thursday night and started a fire<br>that burned out of control, possibly destroying both the northbound and<br>southbound bridges on the heavily congested highway, according to state<br>police.<br><br><br>By SARAH COFFEY<br>Published on 3/26/2004<br>Bridgeport - A fuel oil tanker truck crashed on an elevated section of<br>Interstate 95 in Bridgeport Thursday night and started a huge fire that<br>severely damaged the northbound and southbound bridges, which may be closed<br>for weeks, state police said.<br>The driver of the truck appeared to be the only person injured. He was in<br>stable condition at Bridgeport Hospital with injuries that were not<br>life-threatening, according to broadcast reports. His name was not released.<br>The truck was traveling south on the vital artery connecting the New York<br>area with Connecticut and the rest of New England when it and another<br>vehicle crashed shortly before 8 p.m. between exits 25 and 26 on the Howard<br>Avenue overpass. The highway handles nearly 120,000 vehicles a day on that<br>section.<br>Witnesses said they heard explosions and saw a gigantic fireball shoot into<br>the sky. Traffic was backed up for miles in both directions.<br>The highway bridges on both sides of the highway are new. State engineers<br>were assessing the damage. Electrical wires and the road below the overpass<br>were damaged, authorities said.<br>Sgt. J. Paul Vance, a state police spokesman, urged commercial truck traffic<br>from New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts to enter Connecticut from<br>Interstate 84, or not at all.<br>"It's going to be a proverbial nightmare tomorrow," Vance said late<br>Thursday.<br>The Merritt Parkway, which parallels I-95, was named as an alternate route,<br>but commercial trucks are prohibited from using it. State officials said<br>they had no plans to lift the truck ban.<br>Broadcast reports said several tractor-trailer drivers tried to use the<br>Merritt and were stopped by police. Several bridges on the historic parkway<br>are too low for tall trucks.<br>State police and Department of Transportation officials were working to<br>establish a permanent detour while the two highway bridges are out of<br>commission.<br>Gov. John G. Rowland was flown to the scene in a state police helicopter and<br>planned a late night news conference.<br>Bridgeport Fire Chief Michael Maglione said the southbound overpass appeared<br>to have sagged 3 to 4 feet.<br>"It appears that this highway will not be able to be used for an extended<br>amount of time," Maglione said.<br>Department of Transportation spokesman Chris Cooper said engineers were on<br>the scene. He said one of the two highway bridges buckled due to the immense<br>heat from the fire.
