I'm a big fan of CSI and I always doubt those image manipulation software they have there. Because of these unbelievable scenes I started to doubt the other tools too.

Anyway I tried to improve an image of some birds that I took. Above: before, below: after. This is the most I can do with photoshop.

I've tried a software some time ago, which uses vector analysis and fractals to improve the image and make it more detailed, but can't remember it's name. As far as I remember it didn't give much better results than the one above.

Anyway I was interested to hear your opinion, how much improvement is possible?

[color:green]One man's compost is another man's potpourri.

It's pretty Hollywood, that fabrication. Amazing how quickly a CSI lab CPU will work when a camera is trained on it. Superclusters for the sparkly-clean Nevada crime labs? (:->)) Speaking of which, their labs are pretty slick, brightly reflective, gorgeously spotless places, aren't they? More liberal Hollywood interpretation, of course. But it's entertaining all right. They must have a sizable art department, that show - a large percentage of which must be dedicated to the graphics and SFX aspect alone. I'd love to work on it - plenty of juicy things to get ready for each and every script. Striking visuals, that's for sure. And a honking big weekly budget to blow on them.

For all that, I'm starting to feel that their slick little animations of bullets piercing bone and brain, blood slurping out of various internal crevices and fractures, etc., are fast becoming trite and gimmicky. The audio component tends to be ludicrously overdone in these instances, as well. I predict that in less than a decade this aspect of the show will look cheesy as hell. The show, as with any show really, is always best when it has a strong narrative function.

max
You are right, this style will quickly age, but it's the best gadget show I get on my cable.

[color:green]One man's compost is another man's potpourri.

Did you see Star Trek 4? He was doing 3D modeling on a Mac Plus. 24 does it too. It's just to move the story along and it requires a suspension of disbelief. Personally I think CSI is just a poorly written dumbed down show anyway but that's just my opinion. The show is obviously very popular.

Just to defend the show, it's quite realistic. I watched the real forensic documentary and it's so similar. Only the timing of solving the cases was much longer and the gadgets were a bit low tech. But everything else was the same. Same methods, approach and results.

[color:green]One man's compost is another man's potpourri.

Well I watched the first few episodes and things like one CSI investigator explaining to another CSI investigator what a black box is was just too annoying to me. I realize they have to explain things to the audience, but that was a ridiculous way to do it. I could just imagine me as a professional desktop publisher explaining to another something like what a tiff is. I also found Grisom (the lead guy whatever his name is) to be unintentionally campy.

I really enjoy the show. But one thing that bugs me about it (and it's quite silly, really). Having lived in Las Vegas for over 5 years, it makes me laugh every time I watch it because with the exception of the opening sequence and the cut scenes, the show is obviously not filmed in Las Vegas. There are no lush/tropical wooded areas, no moss-covered groups of oak trees, no mailboxes at the end of the driveway of homes and no aluminum-sided houses in Las Vegas!

Oh, and have you noticed how often they are wearing coats and jackets while outside? Well, in 7 or so years in Las Vegas, I think I wore a light jacket around 2 times. Usually, a sweatshirt is more than enough!

What?
Visit Me!
