This is a little trick I just found recently (accidentally, no less). If you're in an application and want to move a window that's in the background [of that application] hold down command as you click its titlebar/frame and you will be able to move it around without bringing it to the foreground.

I love that trick :)

Others along the same lines - command-click a windows title bar where its name is for a pop-up menu of all the directories it lies within. Very handy.

Cipher13

FYI is called a "path-pop-up menu" and the little icon is called a "proxy icon". Just thought you might like to know. Oh, and one cool thing about the path popup is that you could even do that in system 7!!!

-- John Bailey (Bdog)

Yep, I remember finding the path-pop-up menu trick in System 7.1.2P. :)

Along similar lines, you can command-click the title of an Internet Explorer window and receive a similar "path-pop-up"...

Oh, yes, many apps support those path menus and some also support those menus along side the proxy icon. SoundJam for example. Some are really nice, and will dim out the icon in the document's titlebar and when you save it, it's icon returns to regular again. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? Photoshop and soundjam does this. Some don't, some do.

-- John Bailey (Bdog)

a distinction here... in two threads the words command/click were used to describe opposite meanings. Notably when you Command/Click on a background window it can be dragged, ....., note that if you command before you click that the window STAYS in the background ...= So therefore the idea of Command/Clicking to get the "whateveryouwanttonameitorfightoveritsname" = heirachal menu.. pop down ... is impossible since it is in the background!...as the correct way to say it therefore is Click/Command....which of course first of all brings the window to the foreground an then "command", while or after clicking will bring down the pop-down heirachy of the folder path. kapish?

..

No need for distinction, we're talking two different things...

1. Command-click an active windows title bar (name) to get a popup window. The windw being active is an assumed state.

2. Command-click an inactive window on a draggable border to let it remain inactive while dragging.

Just another tip, command-click some whitespace in an active window (whitespace = the place where files would go...) to get a hand icon. From there, you can drag the window around...

Cipher13

Yea Tree, but click THEN command won't work. If you want to get the path menu on an inactive window, you have to "click THEN command-click". Get it. We ARE talking about two different things there anyways.

-- John Bailey (Bdog)
