I've been watching a BBC series called MI-5, about the adventures of a group of MI-5 agents in and around London. It's a very un-Hollywood show because it grapples with real ethical issues and presents characters who are ambiguous in the best sense of the word. Anyway, in the last episode I saw, one of the characters invents a phrase for the fear-mongering that governments have deployed since 9-11 to frighten us into submitting to government domination. "Velvet fascism." I like the phrase.
